I wanted to say thank you so much to all the parents that came in for career day. The children loved learning about so many different jobs. They loved it so much that is all they wanted to write about on their self-evaluations. I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy days to spend a little time with the children. They are all so proud of their parents and it was so nice to see all their faces light up everytime a parent walked through the door. Thank you again for your kindness, patience, and goodies for the kids.

Week of September 8-12

In F&F we will be taking the Sequence of Events Skill Knowledge Test, Vocabulary, and Performance Task Test over Monday and Tuesday. Please help your children learn those vocabulary words and definitions, pattern statement, and three of the eight process questions. On Wednesday and Thursday we will be starting a brand new unit on Character. The newsletter will be coming home next week.

In Bible we will be learning about Pharaoh and the plagues on Egypt. The memory verse will be Zephaniah 3:17.

In Phonics we will be continuing to review open and closed syllables as well as introduce the ways to spell long a. We will also be reviewing vowel consonant silent e syllables. Here are some tips for Clover Labeling: an open syllable is when a syllable ends in a vowel and the vowel is long like in lo/cate. The o in lo would be long and open. A closed syllable is when a vowel is closed in between two cosonants or is before a consonant like in tab/let. The a and the e would be short and closed. A vowel consonant silent e word is simply a word that ends in a vowel consonant silent e like in scrape. There is the vowel a, the consonant p, and the silent e. I hope this helps explain some of the questions your children may have at home. They may need a little help or encouragement with clover labeling.

In Social Studies we will be starting out unit on the Separatists and the Pilgrims and learning about the Mayflower.

In Math we will be learning how to write subraction story problems and solving many of them. Now would be a good time to buy flashcards if you do not have any at home. Computer games are great too. We have started Mad Minute Math in which the students are given 2 minutes to do 40 addition problems. We do it daily and the more they practice at home the better because the problems will be getting harder each week. Start showing them flashcards now before the problems get too hard!!!
